12 Steps To Move Through A Dark Night of The Soul Episode

I’ve heard of it… I’ve had other people mention it or tell stories about it but until a few months ago I had never truly experienced it for myself. The Dark Night of the soul. The moment when it feels that all is hopeless. When you can’t see the point in going on, when you feel as though nothing matters and who are you really helping anyways. Never before had I experienced such a dark time and let me tell you, it was scary. Especially since I’ve never experienced feelings of depression or sadness before.

The dark night of the soul if you aren’t familiar is what 1/4 of seekers will experience on the road to higher consciousness. In fact, many will go through several based until they experience the profound joy of their truest nature.

The last two years have been filled with so many emotions ups and downs. Struggles and triumphs and the last few months leading up to our LA departure for a year of freedom I started to experience what others have referred to as their “dark night”. I’m not sure what was to cause, my low level vibes, the financial strain I had been experiencing for the past few years, the shitty mindset that I couldn’t seem to shake most days, the collective energy I was picking up being in such a big city?! I can’t really say.

What I can say is this period of time is not fun folks but you can come out the other side of it. Whenever you’re going through a soul aching heart wrenching episode like a “dark night” here are a few things I found that can help.

1. CONNECT TO YOUR HIGHER POWER

This one’s usually the first to go in times of soul growth when funny enough this should be the first thing we go to. It’s tough to remember when you’re in your own stuff. Writing, journaling, meditating, talking to your guides, whatever you do to connect to source, this is one of the greatest ways to help move through the pain of the dark night.

2. CONNECT TO YOUR JOY

Stay connected to things that normally bring you joy, even if it’s not bringing you joy in those moments. Watch funny videos, look at cute fuzzy animals online, find someone to help.

3. NO SPIRITUAL BYPASSING

This means don’t go on pretending everything is fine when it’s not. You have to go through it to come out the other side of it. Feel whatever feelings you gotta experience. It doesn’t feel good but you’ve gotta feel it to heal it.

4. LESSONS & GIFTS

I know it can be difficult when you’re in it however try to find the lessons & gifts in these experiences. What are you meant to be learning? What do you notice? If you were an outside observer of your experience, what is the gift in what you’re going through?

5. REACH OUT FOR SUPPORT

This is a critical step in helping you through this time. When you’re stuck in your head and can’t remember who you are you need a system of support. A mentor, therapist, a tribe of like minded people who can see you, who can support you and tell you who you are. Even if it’s just one person.

6. GRATITUDE

In these moments I know it can feel difficult to find the gratitude in life however the more you practice finding gratitude in the little things the closer you’ll come to moving through the darkness. Write 3-5 things you're grateful for everyday until you truly feel it.

7. CONNECT TO NATURE

Nature can be so healing and therapeutic. For many highly sensitive/empathic people nature is a crucial element in feeling connected, grounded, and in harmony with themselves and the world. I’m learning for myself that being around nature is a foundational need in my ability to help and serve others.

8. SHAKE UP THE ENERGY

Moving the body & shaking up the energy can be super beneficial when going through a time of challenge. Dance to videos online, go take a class you’ve never taken, go for a walk or run. Shake up your body & you’ll start to loosen the funk that’s got you down.

9. SHIFT YOUR PERCEPTION

This one’s super tough especially when you’re in it. You’re mind is telling you this IS reality however it’s just a reflection of how our inner world is being interpreted. It’s up to us to see it differently. Again that’s where looking at what the gifts or lessons might be & remembering to connect to your higher power can help shift your perception.

10. LITERALLY REMOVE YOURSELF FROM YOUR ENVIRONMENT

I found that leaving Los Angeles totally shifted my whole being. Being back in nature and connecting back to my roots has given me a new stronger sense of being. I don’t feel sad, anxious, or depressed any longer. Yes I realize that not everyone is willing to move and some circumstances may not allow for such a move however get out where you can and shift your environment. It can be taking a week long break from social media, rearranging your living space, traveling somewhere new for a week and completely disconnecting from your life. Shifting your body into a new environment can do some major good for your soul!

11. DO A DETOX ON YOUR LIFE

Sensitive folks such as myself take in the energy & emotions of others naturally so it’s important to watch what you’re allowing into your life. Filter what you’re allowing in your world whether thats the news, toxic relationships, scary gory movies, or processed foods. Anything that isn’t serving you should be removed from your presence. Now not everything or everyone can be removed ie. family, but that’s where having boundaries can help!

12. SERVE

Get out and help others in need. When we get into a dark place a lot of times it’s because we’re marinating in our own doubts, fears, and worries. Getting out and serving others can help change all of that.
